International policy news (also known as global policy news or world coverage) is the news media jargon for news relating to foreign affairs, or a global subject. This is distinct from domestic news, or news within a nation-state. Traditionally, this branch of journalism was the province of foreign correspondents, full-time journalists employed by news sources, who travel abroad to report on events, or the work of international news agencies, which prepare articles in bulk and distribute them for use by other news organizations using telegraph or later telephone or satellite technologies.
Foreign policy is the set of guidelines a government or state follows in managing its relationships with other countries, organizations and individuals. These policies are often complex and interdependent. Defense and security are key, with states forming military alliances to counter threats and using soft power to promote peace and international development. Economic interests are also important, with many nations establishing diplomatic missions and negotiating trade agreements. Many states also have humanitarian programs, providing aid and other assistance to developing and less-developed countries.
